Atkinson is a town located in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,178.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 29.2 km2 (11.3 mi2). 28.8 km2 (11.1 mi2) of it is land and 0.4 km2 (0.2 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 1.42% water.
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,178 people, 2,317 households, and 1,777 families residing in the town. The population density is 214.3/km2 (555.2/mi2). There are 2,431 housing units at an average density of 84.3/km2 (218.5/mi2). The racial makeup of the town is 97.62% White, 0.26% African American, 0.06% Native American, 1.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,317 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.8% are married couples living together, 5.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% are non-families. 19.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.08.

Atkinson, NH weaves a rich tapestry of history, dating back to the American Revolution. The one major school in the town, Atkinson Academy, which was incorporated in 1787, but burnt to the ground which invoked a re-build of school in 1803, making it the oldest co-educational school in the country. Relatives of former President John Adams (2) lived in Atkinson, along with fanous politicians and businessmen. Atkinson boasts a reputation to local communities as being a town for rich and distingushed citizens, with many mansions and large homes.
